THE STORK

Fiction, Musical, 75:48 min, 1988, color, NTSC.

Synopsis

Without dialogue, the film paints the picture of an old farm out in the country, not far from a village that has only one hotel. It is here where Edouard (Jack Spinner) lives with his son, Philippe (Paul Babiak), his austere wife, Anne (Bobo Vian), and their daughter, Stephanie (Barbara Zsigovics).

Their daily routine is suddenly interrupted by the enigmatic Pol (Susan Eyton-Jones), a singer who returns to the village after several years' absence. Under her spell, Philippe feels inexorably drawn to the hotel where she is singing. In neglecting his family, tensions begin to arise.

Thus ensues an altercation between father and son: Edouard confronts Philippe for refusing to accept his inevitable responsibilities, which erupts in a physical brawl. Edouard becomes injured and bedridden. Meanwhile, despite Anne being the mother of Philip’s child, she finds great difficulty in trying to rekindle their marriage. Obsessed by her desire for vengeance, she withdraws into herself by day and at night, takes to sleepwalking. Conflicts between the members of the family reach an eventual climax and the unexpected arrival of a stork culminates in a turbulent, but happy ending.

"...sweet little charmer...good dialogue, gritty direction and the regular mix of hip tricks..."
Katherine Monk, Vancouver Sun

"... slummy camp, porno spoof and slice-of-life realism... bitchy, funny and sad."
Ken Eisner, Weekly Variety

Memoirs

a Bashar Shbib film

MEMOIRS

Fiction, Drama, Musical, 82:37 min, 1984, Color, NTSC.

Synopsis

“An elegantly choreographed and archly stylized marriage of Fassbinder and Archie comics, the Montreal-made Memoirs is basically an end-of-the-world teen romance. A bright-eyed and idealistic young writer named Johnny Daze (Philippe Baylaucq) comes to town prowling for something to write about. What he finds is a sinister back alley forbidden zone peopled by gays, artists, prostitutes, transvestites and virtually every kind of conceivable bad influence. But his absolute undoing (and his initiation into the underworld) comes in the form of a bewitching but volatile artist/garbage collector/femme fatale named Ida Rage (Norma-Jean Sanders). Vampiristically sucked dry of both dramatic and psychological realism, Bashar Shbib's first feature is an exercise in pop-media deconstruction that takes the camp aesthetic to near-apocalyptic extremes. If Bertholt Brecht had directed Risky Business, it might have turned out something like this.” - Geoff Pevere

"... a Timothy Leary nightmare after one cocktail too many."
Salem Alaton, The Globe and Mail

“... sinister, stylized New Wave melodrama ... visually interesting throughout, with a rhinestone-in-the-rubble look...”
Janet Maslin, New York Times

"Where has all the value gone?"
Mark Halleck, New York Native

"Imagine Fassbinder without the good acting, passionate intensity or naked self-awareness..."
Robert Strauss, Los Angeles Reader
